"Effectively Caring for Heart Patients on Hospice"

presented by

DESCRIPTION

Heart disease is the primary diagnosis for a large percentage of hospice patients, with heart failure being a leading cause for patients requiring hospice care with heart disease.  Optimal medical management of heart failure patients in hospice includes appropriate medical management of fluid overload and dyspnea as well as other symptoms such as pain, fatigue, insomnia, nausea, and depression.  In this webinar, we will also cover hospice management of patients with implanted devices such as defibrillators and mechanical circulatory support devices.

OBJECTIVES

  • Understand the underlying pathophysiology of both systolic and diastolic heart failure
  • Review classes of medications used for heart failure and the benefits of each to a palliative plan of care
  • Review treatment of other common symptoms for patients with heart failure
  • Deepen understanding of implanted cardiac devices and how these devices impact prognosis and symptom burden when deactivated
