Caring for Difficult Patients and Families While Caring for Ourselves

WEBINAR DETAILS:

Recent and recurrent reports of feelings of being overwhelmed by demanding patient and family needs may be rooted in the demoralizing depersonalization too often associated with clinical practice. This webinar will explore why patients and families are needy and how, by delivering individualized care with empathy, we can profoundly benefit not only those seeking our support, but also ourselves. Additional tips on preventing, recognizing and managing staff "burnout" will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize the characteristics and antecedents of “difficult” behaviors by patients and family members

  • Develop practical strategies and tools for remaining therapeutic, regardless of behaviors that create an adverse feeling within ourselves
  • Understand characteristics of professional burnout and its consequences
  • Develop mechanisms to prevent and mitigate professional burnout

MEET THE PRESENTER

Dr. Marcia Levetown | MD, MMM, HMDC, FAAHPM, BOARD CERTIFIED IN HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE MEDICINE, BOARD CERTIFIED IN PEDIATRICS | Healthcare Communication Associates

Trained as a pediatric critical care physician, I witnessed unspeakable and often avoidable suffering among my patients and their families. This experience drove me to create alternate pathways of care for chronically dying children and their families as well as those suddenly bereaved of traumatic death. Within 3 years, I began caring for adult patients as well and developed the palliative care program at a well-known and highly respected adult hospital. Ultimately, I served as a Regional Medical DIrector for Vitas and briefly as CMO of an independent hospice. Throughout, it was my privilege to be invited to educate fellow advocates for compassionate care, live, virtually, through textbooks, journal articles, curriculum development, research projects and as a peer reviewer. My passion is to assure humane and loving care for patients and families who entrust us to provide for them in their darkest hours.
