A Pilgrim's Way through Grief

Using the story of A Night on Buddy’s Bench, the session explores how Hospice caregivers can approach grief work through the perspective of a pilgrimage or hero’s journey. The workshop will focus on how to be kind and patience in grieving to find solace, meaning and resilience in the face of loss. This session is often used in training of Hospice volunteers.

Learning Objective:

  • Attendee will learn and be able to explain the three-phase of a pilgrimage through grief: the facing on one's own or another's death, how to wrestle with loss to make meaning and how to return holding grief and gratitude together in life.
  • Attendee will learn approaches on how to use the book A Night on Buddy's Bench in their grief work.
  • Attendee will experience and learn the value of listening and storytelling about grief an approach to healing.

Meet the Presenter:

 

Ira Baumgarten | Master in Adult Education | Gerontology Certificate

Bio: Ira Baumgarten is the author of A Night on Buddy's Bench and The Pilgrim's Way through Grief. He has conducted workshops using his materials for Hospices on the local and statewide level in New York, Maine and Massachusetts. He recently was awarded a grant by Northern Lights Hospice of Maine to support his sharing his books and workshops sessions work other Hospices Articles of his work have appeared in the National Hospice Foundation newsletter and their E-hospice network.
